(This goes after my last bit of story. I had fun picking a topic to weave my story around and I hope you all like it! Please let this post!)
“Ya, so sorry about that,” I replied. “But you can’t expect much else for a welcome when you invade my dream and my house in the middle of the night.”
“Good point, but at least I tried to warn you that I was here.”
I can say that at this point my mom got passed her shock and went straight to being an angry mother bear.
“You did what! You know that the last time that machine was used you were out for three days!”
“Well, I forgot about that, and then I remembered and needed to make sure that I didn’t knock her unconscious before I woke you up. And it’s beside the point,” said Malachy. “I’ve come to see Shawna. We need to begin the children’s training.”
“Now?” My mom replied with shock. “But you said that they wouldn’t have to be ready until they were at least twenty, and none of them has fully discovered their abilities yet.”
“Yes I know, and I regret doing this to any of you. However, there’s been a development.”
If you dear reader are confused at this point, don’t worry. I had it even worse. I was excited to find out I had a crazy uncle, however, this was a bit too much for my brain.
“What’s going on?” I asked. “I have an uncle, who has a machine that can invade dreams, who in the middle night decides pays a visit? And mom, did I hear you say that I have ‘abilities’? My brain is going to explode!”
“Honey, I know this is strange,” said my mom in her most comforting voice. “Just let us sort this out real quick before we say anything else, ok?” And turning to Uncle Malachy said, “Well, on one hand your timing is impeccable. She just had her first major flare a few months ago. Now, what sort of developments are we talking about Malachy?”
“It’s Maitiu and all of us out fighting, our strength is failing from constant battle and I fear that the Hunters will overcome us soon if we do not aid them now. That is why we must begin Shawna and the other’s training as soon as possible.”
“Oh Maitiu,” said my mother, a glistening tear running down her cheek. She turned back to me and pulled me close, stroking my hair as she held me tightly. “Are you sure all of the training equipment is still working? It’s been years since her father built all of it.”
“Way ahead of you. A little work on the machines and they will be like new; although some need it more than others. We just have to be sure that the Hunters do not discover her existence until she’s ready.”
Finally it was my turn to be included in this conversation, “Shawna, I think it’s high time for a history lesson.”
My long-lost crazy uncle, (who at this point I had taken to calling Uncle M) decided that we needed to go out into the backyard for a campfire. Just dying to find out what was going on; I went to get some firewood from the shed as fast as I could while my mom got out the chairs. As I brought some kindling to the pit and was about to light it, Uncle M stopped me.
“No need for that, go sit with your mother.”
My mom had pulled out her special double chair; the one that her and dad had only used. I had never seen her pull it out, and now she had me sit with her and pulled me in close under our blanket.
“Watch,” she told me. “You’re going to love this.”
I watched as he set up the wood, but got a bit board and looked up to the sky. A beautiful late summer night filled with billions of stars; I could get lost up there. Just looking up through the trees makes me wish I could fly up through them up into the clear night. Unfortunately, the good weather we have tonight won’t last long, in a couple weeks it will begin raining well into next summer. Sometimes life is a bummer when you live in Oregon.
I looked back down to see that Uncle M had finally got his firewood just the way he wanted it, and decided that it was time to begin. It was then I noticed that I still had the fire starter in my hand. I went to hand it to him but my mom pulled me back.
“He doesn’t need that,” she said as she bit her lip like she does when she has a secret that she can’t wait to share.
Uncle M then started to rub his hands together. Slowly at first, their speed increased until they were a blur. They began to glow ever so slightly from his palms, and at this point he opened his hands toward the pit as if giving it a gift. Leaning closely he blew as if blowing paper off a table, creating a cascade of sparks that leapt to the wood; erupting into an emerald green flame, effectively scaring me enough to almost tip the double chair my mom and I were sitting in.
I now see why she had brought it out.
He smiled as he brushed off the last remaining sparks off his hands and sat down in his chair (no doubt enjoying scaring me out of my wits as payback for earlier). Closing his eyes and breathing deeply, the fire seemed to do the same as it settled to only a tongue of emerald flame.
“There are those that walk on the edge of this world, those that see the unseen realms and powers, and who know the unknown. There are those that were given to this world as a defense against the most dreadful evils that have been unleashed into this realm since the fall of Adam and Eve; things that are the very spawn of sin, things that have danced with death.
“‘In the beginning,’ all have heard the story of creation. Of how God drew back the waters, made all animals along with His most prized creation; man. How He formed him from clay and breathed life into his lungs, giving him not only breath, but a soul. He gave the most wonderful gift, true life; a life with Him.
I looked down into the fire and had to double take to believe what I was seeing; three figures walking through a scene that looked like an orchard. Two were holding hands, and kept looking toward the third as he pointed out plants and brought animals to them. It was positively beautiful.
“Mankind, however, was beguiled by the Fallen One, who had taken possession of a serpent in order to sneak into Eden. This led to the horrible fall of man, who literally had paradise and gave it up for a lie.
“All of heaven wept for man and for the earthen realm that God had so beautifully created, because paradise would have to end. No longer fit for the perfect wonder God had created, the couple had to leave the garden and enter a newly defiled world.
The images in the fire changed with the words, matching to display the scene. I felt my heart began to break as Adam and Eve wept as they left the garden, wishing I could comfort them even though they were in their fiery world.
“Many years past, men rose and fell. A great ark was built and the waters once again covered the earth. Later still, mankind faced a new, dark threat. One man, seeing himself above his fellows, decided to take his ‘rightful place’ as ruler of all. Unable to succeed alone, he called upon the forces of the Fallen One to gain the power he needed to rule. This self-proclaimed ‘king’ began to construct a monument; a tower to the heavens. This tower would become the straw that would break the camel’s back.
“A messenger was sent to a chosen few who would help to put a stop to man’s madness. God would confuse mankind by creating new languages stopping construction of the tower, but the king would not give up that easily. Mad with power and having Darkness to aid his cause made him too dangerous to the rest of man; far too dangerous for average men to handle alone.
“Strange gifts, powers once unknown were revealed to eight young individuals. Brought together, they were not only trained to battle by the messenger; but they were also trained in the ways of truth lest they be tempted and swayed by the words of Darkness.
“When the time came, the eyes of man were shielded from the raw power of the Almighty; while inside the tower, a battle raged over mankind’s fate. As the battle intensified, new tongues began to be spoken around the base of the tower. Confusion began to take root, as no one knew what to do; working stopped, and all that could be heard was incoherent yelling as chaos took form.
“Upon the king’s defeat, the young men and women helped the people find their families and placed them with those that spoke the same tongue. Everyone gathered together all of their possessions and began to make the journey to new lands with those that spoke as they did. All of these people would become new nations.
“The eight young people raised their voices to give praises to the Creator for their victory. However, there was more to be done; the tower was still standing. Following the instructions of the messenger, two stood at the base of each side of the tower, once again lifted their hands to their Creator, while commanding the tower to come down.
“A great green flame began to circle from the top of the tower, quickly consuming it the base and even farther below the surface; with an earth shaking rumble the tower vanished.
“We were given the mission to watch over our fellow man and to intervene only when so instructed; but evil takes residence in this world far more than men know. Since that time we have kept our instruction close to our hearts, and have given our lives in order that His will would be done.
“Now, thanks to His son’s sacrifice, all can now have life reconciled with the Creator once again. But in an effort to take those that God loves, the Dark One has made his presence in this realm even greater; sending out all manners of evil to chase away from the light those who long to be saved.
“Since the beginning of time we have kept our presence a secret, from the beginning of all nations we were God’s chosen.”
I gasped as he suddenly opened his eyes. I had not noticed the color while we were inside, but they were a shocking green; the same emerald color as the fire flaming up with fierce intensity once again.
“We are The Chosen.”
