On the Live-Stream last week a number of you were asking why you're not able to use letters, numbers, and various words in chat. I just wanted to stop by today to try to explain it a bit.
Unfortunately we aren't able to have moderators who can stay on and monitor chat all day, every day. So we have an automated filter that only allows you to say certain words from a list of safe ones. We realize that it's annoying but we have a responsibility to make sure that this site is always a safe place. That means making tough decisions about what is or isn't allowed. Numbers, colors, and all of the other words that aren't allowed are too easy to use to say things that are offensive, or reveal personal details like phone numbers or addresses.
At some point in the future we'd like to have a smarter filter that will allow you more freedom to chat while still staying safe, but that's not something we have set up yet. In the meantime, posts in the forums are reviewed by a team of moderators—so if you want to say something more complicated, this is the place to do it.
If you want to see more specifics about what to say and what not to say, check out the full rules.
I hope that makes sense. Have fun, and stay safe!
