Imma get this over with
In the week since the attack, a new boy had joined. His name was Tyler.
I didn't like him. At all.
He constantly fretted about not yet learning how to shift or mastering his element, and he hung out with Calaena way too much. Calaena never trained with me anymore, she was always helping Tyler.
We were eating in the cafeteria when I noticed that she sat, finally, alone.
"Hi." I said quietly as I sat down at her table.
Calaena drummed her fingers on the table. "Hi."
I cleared my throat. "How have you been?"
I felt pretty awkward. Usually it was Calaena who did most of the talking.
I opened my mouth to attempt to start a conversation, but Tyler appeared next to Calaena with a tray of food and sat down.
I frowned as the two of them started talking.
"So," I interrupted them, "where are you from?" I did my best not to glare at Tyler.
"Here." Tyler made it sound as if it was painfully obvious. "I went to Cal's school."
"I don't think she likes being called Cal." I muttered.
"No, I'm fine with it. You can call whatever." Calaena said.
"She isn't fine with it. She's just trying to be nice." I narrowed my eyes.
"I'm perfectly fine with it! You've called me Cal before."
"You're fine with me calling you Cal. Not him."
"Whatever." Calaena rolled her eyes. "Call me Cal if you want, Tyler."
"What's your element anyway?" I asked.
Tyler shrugged. "Not sure yet, Brian thinks-"
"Brian could be wrong. Just because he's old doesn't mean he's right."
The three of us grew silent as Brian walked by our table.
Calaena glared at me for a moment. "What's your problem?"
"I don't have a problem."
Silverstream arrived and sat down at our table. "Can I join you?"
"Please do." Calaena gave me a last glare.
"By the way, Calaena," Silverstream piped up, "happy birthday. Sorry it's so late, I didn't get a change to talk to you until now."
Calaena smiled. "Thanks. I thought everyone had forgotten."
Silverstream shook her head. "Nope. Silver told me last week."
"Your birthday was last week?" I stared at Calaena. "When?"
"The day after the attack." Silverstream responded for Calaena.
"Oh." I felt my heart drop, remembering the conversation we'd had while cleaning the cafeteria. I watched Calaena, unsure of what to say.
A short, way too fast paced and lazy PoV. Have a good day.
