Tigris turned into a peregrine falcon and launched into the darkening sky.
The woods were incredibly green and sunlit, and there were streams and water everywhere. That would've been good, except for all the bugs. Tigris dropped down and flew a little lower.
She saw Zero and Gray talking away from the camp. Her curiosity got the best of her. She swooped down and landed in a tree. They continued speaking.
“Zero,” Gray was saying. “For real - where are we?”
“Tennessee, stupid,” said Zero distractedly. She was looking in small crevices in a rock for whatever reason.
“Yes, but these bu - what the heck are you even doing?”
Zero spun to look at him, her eyes bright. She whispered something inaudible.
“What about them?” asked Gray.
“THESE BUGS!” cried Zero. “That’s what's been bother-” Suddenly she stopped and looked around. “We have to go back to camp, quick.”
“Why?” Gray said, looking clueless.
The sun was almost done setting. A sharp howl cut the forest-y silence, and more followed.
“IS THAT A GOOD ENOUGH REASON FOR YOU?” hollered Zero, and she and Gray took off, Tigris following. When they got back to camp, Tigris turned into human but was feeling odd, like she was hungry, full, and nauseous at the same time.
“The bugs,” Zero told everyone loudly. “They’re spreading a disease. It's not fatal, but it weakens you.”
“Who has it?” demanded Kevin at once.
“Magnus,” Sakura spoke up. “Selene, Pizz C - who else?”
“Me,” said Tigris, but she instantly felt bad about it. “I’m fine, though. The wolves -”
“Coyotes,” corrected Twilight.
“Coyotes?” Cassy jumped to her feet. Growls sounded from the bushes. “Uh, not good. RUN!”
Then coyotes were freaking everywhere. Pizz C stumbled and so did Magnus, but Conrade, Cassy, and Kitsune helped them. Tigris turned into a tiger and slashed one’s muzzle.
“SCATTER!” screeched Twilight in a high-pitched voice.
“No!” said Crescent, darting to the left. “This way! Stick together!”
Selene was falling back, looking horribly pale. Tigris turned and ran back, but Bobcat reached her first and helped her. Tigris started to turn again, but a coyote clamped it’s jaws around Selene’s leg. She fell, and the sound off her hitting the ground was heard over the barks and screams. Selene clawed desperately at the ground.
“No!” Bobcat ran to help her, but she was already being pulled way back. A coyote jumped at Selene’s.
Tigris went human, darted back to Bobcat, grabbed her shoulders, and ran. Selene kicked the coyote in the face. She was almost already in the bushes. Tigris and Bobcat bolted, and didn’t look back. When they caught up to the group, Tigris had to say it.
“Selene is dead.”
