Admin Lisa Q. : admin

Welcome to Fan Appreciation Week, Day 4! Now, I know you all are big book worms like me (why else would we be here?), so today, the MB mods are celebrating that nerdiness in the best way -- with book recommendations!

Read on to see what books the mods are excited about and give us some recommendations of your own! Book Worms Unite!

LISA (yours truly)

Not too long ago, I found my book soulmate (send my apologies to Luna Lovegood) in Jamie Kelly, the star of Jim Benton’s DEAR DUMB DIARY series. When a book can make me laugh so hard that I cry, I know I’ve found the perfect match in book heaven. If you’ve ever had to deal with clueless parents, best friends with a questionable criminal background, or a crush on the eighth cutest boy in school, allow me to introduce you to your next favorite series.

KEITH

Do you like video games?

Do you like books?

Are you currently in school?

Have you ever had a problem that you weren’t sure how to handle?

DO YOU THINK ADMIN GAVIN BROWN IS AWESOME?!?

If you have answered YES to any of the above questions, then you owe it to yourself to check out Gavin Brown’s book, JOSH BAXTER LEVELS UP. It’s a brilliant story about a boy named Josh Baxter, who is dealing with all the issues which come along with being the new kid at school. With his grades slipping and friend circle almost non-existent, Josh decides to call on the power of video games to help him turn his school life around. Reimagining his daily routine in the form of a video game, Josh must form a trusted alliance (make a group of friends), hone his powerful skills (improve his grades), and somehow triumph in the biggest and baddest boss battle he’s ever known (tangle with school bully, Henry Schmittendorf – aka the Mitten Monster – AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!).

This book effortlessly uses video game comparisons to discuss some very common and important issues about growing up in a fun, fresh, and exciting way. Oh, and did I mention it’s written by Admin Gavin Brown?!?!? What more could you want??? Cupcakes?? Ok, yea, I want cupcakes too. BUT CHECK OUT THIS BOOK!

NICK

My favorite new book of 2016 is SOME KIND OF COURAGE by Dan Gemeinhart, because it’s about a boy who is kind and thoughtful . . . but also tough as nails! In his quest to get his pony back from the man who stole her, he has to survive a bear attack, river rapids, runaway trains, and wicked outlaws . . . and he never backs down. Yee-haw!

BETH

The I SURVIVED series is one of my favorites! Each historical fiction book follows a character at they experience a real life disaster. I learn so much from every book and find myself on the edge of my seat wondering how the characters will prevail. The latest book explores the Hindenburg Disaster—you won’t want to miss this one! Plus, we’ve got a cool excerpt HERE that shows you real photos and videos from the disaster.

ZACK

Usually I’m a fantasy guy – thus editing Spirit Animals – but Varian Johnson’s THE GREAT GREENE HEIST is just such a blast of a read that I couldn’t put it down. Varian is especially great at writing savvy, snappy characters, and Jackson Greene is a fantastic protagonist. He’s smart. He’s funny. And who doesn’t love a reformed con-kid that decides to use their scheming powers for good?

Some of my favorite stories are the ones where kids who at first glance seem totally different end up working together to take down a bad guy – especially when the bad guy is a corrupt, clueless grown-up. Plus if you finish the book and realize that Jackson has gone and heisted your heart, don’t worry. The sequel, To Catch a Cheat, just came out this January.

GAVIN

There’s no way to describe Natalie Lloyd’s A SNICKER OF MAGIC without calling it “magical." I guess you could say “enchanting” or “spellbinding.” But in the end you’d be trying to describe a book full of wonder and joy that a few lines can’t describe. Just read this book.

Wow, thanks for the reccomendations! I can't wait to find them at my library ;)

I was wondering if anyone reads the series The Unwanteds. It's about a world called Quill where creativity is a death sentence - but a kind mage named Mr. Today saves all the creative 13-year-olds every year, when they are "Purged" out of Quill's 'intelligence-and-strength-are-better-than-creativity' society. He brings them into a magical land called Artimé, where they can hone their creative skills, and eventually use them partnered with magic... to protect Artimé from Quill, should the Quillitary discover them.

I'm also a HUGE Harry Potter fan, but it's a more well-known book series, so I won't bother explaining the plot.

I can't wait for tomorrow's "Fan Appreciation Week" post!!!

I LOVE The Unwanteds. My other recommendations would be...

Out of my Mind-Sharron Draper  (This is my favorite book of all time. It's about this girl who due to having cerebral palsy is in a wheelchair and cannot communicate with others, but is really smart and has a photographic memory)

King of the Wind-Margurite Henry  (This book won the Newbery medal an is a really sweet book about a boy Agba and his horse Sham, as they move from Africa to Europe)

The False Prince-Jennifer Neilsen  (This is a great fantasy book about an orphan Sage who is competing with two other boys to win power, and to not die.)

Princess Academy-Shannon Hale  (Pretty much everything Shannon Hale has written is good and I would recommend (Books of Bayern, Book of a thousand Days, 4th Spirit Animals book) but I chose this one to put here because it won Newbery Honor and there are two books that come after it. It is about these girls from an outlying region of this kingdom who are learning how to be a princess after a harsh life mining on Mt. Eskal. The prince will then come to choose one of the girls to be his bride.)

The One and Only Ivan-Katherian Applegate  (This also won the Newbery medal and is about a gorilla in a mall circus who is trying to get himself and his friends out of cruel ownership and to a zoo)

The School for Good and Evil-Soman Chainani  (This is a trilogy about two girls who are kidnapped and taken to the School for Good and Evil one to learn to be a princess and the other a witch, but when their schools are switched and they begin to learn new things about themselves they must get back home before it's too late.)

All of these books are way better than I'm making them sound.

I`ve read most of the books that the Mods have recommended. Dear Dumb Diary is sort of a strange book series.

My favorite series are.................

PERCY JACKSON!

KANE CHRONICLES!

MAGNUS CHASE!

THE HEROES OF OLYMPUS!

HARRY POTTER!

LAND OF STORIES!

SPIRIT ANIMALS!

THE UNWANTEDS!

WINGS OF FIRE!

39 CLUES!

GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE!

WARRIORS!

SURVIVORS!

SEEKERS!

Not necessarily in this order.

I am also waiting for the Trials of Apollo because Rick Riordan is a great author. And I want to read The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place and How to Train Your Dragon, but I can't find the books in my library.

A book I can suggest for you is Warriors by Erin Hunter! It's similar to Spirit Animals, but instead about people and animals, it's about cats. They go on quests, interpret phrophecies, and communicate with each other! It is a wonderful series!

It would take to long to list all the books i like. I would suggest reading the giver and the books after it though.

It is about a young boy named Jonas who gets a special job within the comunity. He runs away though with a baby. You also meet several other people in the series but Louis Lowry is an amazing writer and you should the other books after it. It all links together in the end.

Wow. All these books look amazing, (I especially want to read: Dear Dumb Diary, not because I've ever dealt with that stuff, because the girl on the cover makes me think of myself as a cartoon. Just add black hair and it's me.)

I can give some recommendations because I've seen others do that. My first favorite book series have a tie! Warriors and Harry Potter. Oh my gosh, both of those are so amazing, I can't decide. Who wouldn't want to read about amazing cats in four clans? (I've read every single book in every single series.) Or about a crazy wizard world?

Spirit Animals is a really close second, followed by Survivors, Mouseheart, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and Foxcraft!
