I can go ahead and do her nectar ceremony, like a flashback.
I woke on my eleventh birthday in a lumpy bed with a thin quilt. I quickly dressed in my best clothes, for today was my Nectar Ceremony.
I peered across the room at my little sister, Mia, sleeping peacefully. She had no idea what Erdas was going through, just happy in her own little world.
I looked around the small room we had been assigned in the rundown orphanage we had lived in for the past seven years. “Oh Mom and Dad!”, I thought. “I wish that you were here!”
A door opened. I swiveled my head around to see Ms. Cawley beckoning for me to wake Mia. I bent and whispered in her ear. “Wake up, Mia.” She opened her eyes and gave me a sleepy smile, then dressed as quick as she could. “What do you think you will summon at your ceremony, Sera?”
I stiffened, and glanced at Ms. Cawley. The elderly widow’s eyebrows were burrowed into a frown. “I don’t suppose I’ll summon an animal.” I told Mia. Mia frowned. “Why not? Why don’t you have faith? This is your dream.. our dream!”
My job is to care for you,” I told her. I tightened my red cloak around my shoulders. Dreaming was for naive children who had families to care for them. Not for me. I had to be realistic.
Yet I couldn’t help thinking about how amazing it would be to summon a spirit animal. A bond like no other..
Ms. Cawley, still frowning, led us to the center of the town in Amaya. I stood with the three others nervously. One girl squirmed as her mother checked her over. She did not realize how lucky she was to have parents wat h her nectar ceremony.
A Greencloak strode toward us with a bottle in her hand, glinting amber in the sun. The first boy took a sip. Nothing happened. He slouched away to his parents. The second, a girl, took the Nectar of Ninani. She walked away quickly when nothing appeared,
The third boy sipped it and nothing happened.
Then, the Greencloak stepped toward me. She let me a sip of the Nectar. It tasted warm, like honey, but was a bit hard to swallow.
Then a flash and a roll of thunder. I looked to see a beautiful buckskin horse galloping towards me. It whinnied, it’s coat gleaming in the sunlight. I caught my breath as it stopped in front of me and bent it’s golden nose to me. I touched her nose, then slid my hand over it’s whole body. It snorted, prancing around me. She was quick as an arrow. “Artemis.” I whispered. She nickered softly. Mia cheered.
“The conquerors are coming.” Said the Greencloak. ”My name is Lenori. Come with me.”
“I’m taking my sister with me.” I told her firmly. She simply nodded. And that is how I landed in Greenhaven.
