I remember seeing this series start since I was... in 5th grade (wow, time has passed). It always seemed interesting but I finally picked up a book when the school year was almost through, and of course I was hooked and kept reading the sequels. When remembering Wild Born, I have to say that the Nectar ceremony chapters were the best, but Rollan's was my favorite!
Rollan was actually my favorite character in the first arc. Obviously, he's funny to watch, but there's still more to him than just that. He doesn't choose to become a Greencloak at first, and it takes time for him to trust them. Despite that and how he had a hard life on the streets, he still has a sense of justice.
But although Wild Born was where I first became a Greencloak, when Shane's first e-book came out I switched to a Conqueror and then Redcloak later on. I'm going to be honest here: I didn't think much of Shane at first other than he's Gar's nephew and a skilled enemy, but he cares enough for Abeke to maybe make Shabeke come true and help the Greencloaks eventually. But then I read Rise and Fall.
And I didn't see that ending coming, but it was amazing nevertheless! Instantly, Shane became a more dangerous villain, and I wanted to see more of him.
I read the e-book right after, which added way more characterization and depth than was ever shown in the main series (Side-note: Guess which book is my favorite. Venom? You're right!). By all the Great Beasts, Shane had the worst destiny and backstory when compared to the Four Heroes... him becoming the Reptile King was almost inevitable with how the Greencloaks and Great Beasts left Stetriol.
Want to also know my favorite fight in the series though? Forget battling the Great Beasts - Shane and Abeke's duel in The Evertree was way more climatic! Want to quickly sum up why I love Shane? Read the chapter with the duel. "You summoned Uraza!... You were handed a hero's choice."
