>alright i’m in time to send in the overly long form v2
Name- Kurara Kidoku (a japanese name with some spooky alternate readings)
Nickname- Klara, because the name Kurara is the Japanese equivalent of this and Kiku, (read ‘喜苦’, context in the ‘Appearance’ and ‘Backstory’ sections) a nickname given to her by her former bandmates due to her love of horror movies, her ability as a Canetis, her boundless energy and recklessness, her spooky alternate name readings and her unwillingness to do things the easy way ever.
Sexuality- She’s gay, but completely oblivious.
Instrument- She plays the viola, along with the electric guitar. (Her powers are stronger when she’s playing the viola, but I guess the guitar could work in a pinch?
Faction- Pulchritudo Pars
Personality- Kurara is energetic and cares a lot about her friends, to the point of coming off as overprotective and clingy. She wants nothing but the best for those around her, to the point of bringing herself down to uplift her peers. She thrives both in the spotlight and behind the scenes, although the tactics she uses differ between circumstances. In the open, she acts as a democratic leader, making sure that every opinion is taken into account when making decisions. When she operates away from the eyes of others, she can be very manipulative, doing questionable things without hesitation, although she only ever acts in the interests of her friends. When forced to go against someone she likes, she feels horrible about it, and wonders if she could have prevented it at all. Despite her pragmaticism, she gets emotionally attached to people very easily, sometimes in a manner bordering on Stockholm/Lima syndrome. She will sometimes try to find reasons why her enemies aren’t to blame, even while actively working against them. She doesn’t have a malicious bone in her body, but she can go to extremes when driven by necessity.
In daily life, Kurara can be somewhat extreme, roping her friends into participating in her crazy antics. She can be a bit of a hopeless romantic, and she often dwells on the idea of finding true love in her free time. She loves taking care of animals and plants, and any bedroom she calls hers for an extended period of time will inevitably end up looking somewhat like a hedge maze. She sometimes loses things, and she has learned from experience that they’re usually tangled in one of the plants in her room. She tends to panic when they aren’t, though. She tries to keep herself organized, but for most of her life, she’s developed a habit of being disorganized to a fault, so it’s a bit of an uphill battle. She has about fifteen binders, though, and those seem to be working for her.
Kurara spends her alone time reading, listening to music, and writing and playing songs. Along with the viola, Kurara sings and plays the guitar, and she loves composing music. Mostly love songs. She doesn’t enjoy most sports, as she can’t run for very long due to her legs getting sore easily, but she loves swimming and playing badminton, along with most extreme sports. (She’s a bit of an adrenaline junkie.) She also likes watching horror movies and scaring others, although she gets nightmares from them most of the time. Her insistence on trying to scare others can get annoying, and she also doesn’t have a good notion of boundaries, sometimes placing people under the effects of her power to perform harmless pranks. If she’s told that something specifically makes someone uncomfortable, however, she’ll do her very best to avoid doing it. Kurara wants to spook, not harass.
Kurara understands most dark things, although she pretends that she doesn’t. She kind of refuses to acknowledge death, and tragedies occurring to people she knows often fail to process for days after they occur. She does her best to support others during times of hardship, and she believes that a tragedy means that something good is going to happen next. She often tries to fix people’s problems for them, although this doesn’t always work as intended. She doesn’t know when to let go of things, and can cause people even more trouble with her insistence on fixing every single bad thing.
-Plants (All kinds, but her favourite plants are ivy, succulents and orchids.)
-Her guitar (It’s a limited edition electric guitar with a clear acrylic body, LED lights built into the frets and controls, and a plain white pickguard. She got it when she was thirteen, after saving up her money for six years. She has a pretty cheap amp for it, and she usually just plugs headphones into it so as not to disturb anyone else.)
-coloured contact lenses (Currently she prefers bright warm colours because they’re fun.)
-Music (All kinds, she just really wants to play/sing/listen/compose all the time.)
-Playing difficult songs on the guitar and the viola (She likes a challenge.)
-Horror movies (Kurara really appreciates a good sp00p. A good scare. A good solid Jason Voorhees movie.)
-Swimming (Kurara just really likes swimming. It’s fun.)
-Scaring people (Fun fact: she has contact lenses that give the illusion of completely black eyes, sclera and all, and her eyes without contact lenses look like the real-life equivalent of the Dull Eyes of Unhappiness trope. She also knows multiple facts about disturbing topics.)
-Cats (I mean, who doesn’t. Tayo also owns a cat, who stays with her at the hospital. He would’ve gotten brainwashed at the concert if he were there.)
-Reading (She likes long romance, horror and fantasy novels she can get lost in. She also really likes to read manga.)
-Badminton (Badminton’s one of those sports she can actually play with her inability to run too much.)
-Extreme sports (She particularly likes bungee jumping and jumping off of cliffs into water.)
-Watching anime (Well, she gets pretty jealous because the art and the animation’s always so good, and she likes trying to replicate the style of their soundtracks. She’s watched Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni about 56 times already.)
-Rhythm Games (Hidamari Rhodonite is absolutely the best song ever created oh my gosh)
-Literally everything being copacetic seriously can things stop going wrong for one heckin second first it was the notebook and then it was Tayo’s crash and then i brainwashed my friends at the concert and NOW THERE ARE EVIL CANETI AND MONSTERS OH MY GOD
-Drugs and alcohol (Mainly because of an incident involving one of her former band members that resulted in loss of limb, see the ‘Backstory’ section for details)
-Inactivity (She needs to be moving or doing something all the time.)
-Having to go against her friends. (She just wants to be a nice friend qaq)
-Running (Her feet and hurt when she runs for any significant amount of time.)
-Not being allowed to listen to music (Silence is boring.)
-Losing her binders (Any of the 15+ she owns.)
-People she likes failing or being unhappy (“You will live a happy and fulfilling life, or else.”)
-Stealing (One of her classmates in elementary school stole her notebook and never gave it back and she’s still really mad about it.)
Kurara has an average build, and she’s a little on the short side, only 5’3”. Her posture is mostly friendly and open, although anyone that recognizes it will see that she is almost always blading (stepping back with her dominant leg so her shoulder and arm on her non-dominant side are more exposed) which can be a sign of aggression. Kurara does this so she’s already to jump or dance or otherwise release some of her energy in whatever way seems fit at the moment.
Kurara has peach skin with a few freckles, though her skin doesn’t have very many marks other than the freckles. She has a heart-shaped face with a small celestial nose, and her lips are of an average size and colour, with a peaked Cupid’s bow. Her ears are of an average size, and are pierced Her face displays a lot of emotion, and her expressions can be over-the-top, but they give a sense of sincerity.
Kurara’s eyes are upturned and expressive, giving off an air of energy and happiness, but her irises are a dull, lifeless grey. She often wears colored contacts to hide the real color of her eyes, as they’ve been described as somewhat unsettling even when Kurara isn’t trying to be. As of the beginning of the RP, Kurara is wearing bright pink contact lenses.
Kurara’s hair is, well, extremely long. It reaches her calves when tied in her typical fashion (tied once at neck level) and just reaches the ground when let down. It is light brown in colour and mostly straight, although due to having it tied as it is most of the time, her hair curls inwards at about neck level. She usually has it tied with a bright pink ribbon, although she will braid her hair sometimes, or wear it in styles that require multiple (sufficiently cute) hair ties. Her hair is resistant to hair chalks/hair colours that wash out, and she’s kind of scared to try actual hair dye. She realizes that with hair her length, it would be dumb to attempt to colour the entire thing, so she’s thinking colouring the tips of her hair, or having a single streak, but she’s also just really scared of things going horribly wrong and her hair turning grey before she’s even become an adult.
Kurara has her ears pierced and takes full advantage of this: she has multiple pairs of earrings and she seems to have one set for each opportunity. Her favourite pair is a pair of earrings with tiny clay flowers on them, almost like a bouquet of flowers on her ears. Kurara is super girly. I, the author, am not. Half of the time, I’m not sure if I know what I’m saying. Send help.
Kurara likes cute clothes. She looks good in dresses, although she refuses to acknowledge this and gets embarrassed when anyone else tells her. She likes wearing skirts, though, and she’ll wear any colour as long as she thinks it’s cute enough. She really likes high-waisted skirts or shorts with collared shirts, cute patterns, and oversized sweaters, although she’s really specific about the fabric used and how they fit. She can’t stand being uncomfortable in clothing, no matter how cute it is.
Apart from formal settings, Kurara refuses to wear any shoes other than running shoes. Her current favourite pair of running shoes is a pair of white canvas shoes with fake flowers on the laces.
Kurara has a hoodie was embroidered for her by Yukiko after the show in the hospital (see the ‘Backstory’ section for context on both Yukiko and the show.) The hoodie is raspberry pink and has her name embroidered on the back in multicoloured threads, but with dark alternate readings for some of the characters in her name (so instead of 玖蘭々喜特, which uses the characters for “nine” (玖), “orchid” (蘭), “rejoice in” (喜) and “special” (特), it reads 苦蘭々喜毒, using the character 苦 (“suffering”) instead of 玖, and the character 毒 (“poison”) instead of 特.)
Kurara has a special fake leather pouch she keeps her guitar picks in, and she has a wide variety of them, with different designs and shapes and such. The strap for her guitar was originally teal with no patterns, but she’s ironed on so many patches over the years that the base color isn’t exposed at all. She almost always wears headphones- an expensive mint green pair she works hard to keep functioning, and a series of cheaper headphones she uses in harsh circumstances.
Kurara usually carries her guitar or her viola with her, and the cases are covered in patches and stickers too. She also has a black backpack with thin white stripes, and when she’s doing something slightly less mundane, she’ll carry that with her too.
Music Preferences- Kurara prefers songs that are challenging to play, and various songs she’s written herself.
Power- Kurara can manipulate other people (and even animals) to perform simple tasks. It is obvious that said beings are under her control, as they will move as if they are priests attending mass, with their heads bowed, their eyes permanently open and glowing the colour of whatever contact lenses Kurara is wearing at the time. They will also repeat lines of nonsense (and occasionally things along the lines of “praise the venom queen” [in reference to one of the spooky alternate readings]). Even if they’re animals.
Kurara can’t choose who she affects with the power, and they speak perpetually until/unless they are rendered incapable. They’re useless for stealth purposes, and while Kurara can technically have them perform more complex tasks, that would take her concentration off of her viola, which would most likely cause the spell to break. The number of humans or animals that are affected by the spell varies, but the number is almost always a multiple of nine (or everyone in the room if there are less than nine people). Before being taken over by the spell, those affected vividly imagine things like churches, cults, and strange rituals. The spell tends to fail, be reduced in power, or take time to fully take effect if Kurara is nervous or not taking her performance seriously, (e.g. while practicing).
I’m unsure if this is a given, but the spell doesn’t take effect if a recording of her performance is listened to.
Power Song- Any of the pieces in Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor (I’d like to think that it’s beautiful and emotional) but specifically Lacrimosa.
Talents- Kurara is bilingual, she knows English and Japanese. (I don’t know Japanese that well, though, so please forgive me qaq). She has a pretty good voice, and she can play both the viola and the guitar. Song lyrics come easily to her, and she’s a pretty great composer. She’s also a good manipulator. Additionally, she can play her instruments for long periods of time with only short breaks between pieces.
Background- From a young age, Kurara loved playing the guitar. She soon outgrew (wore out and rendered unusable) the child-sized acoustic guitar she’d gotten for her birthday one year, and moved on to a full-sized one; she saved her money for an electric guitar, and she found a group of friends who also had a passion for music. They were only entering middle school at the time, but they decided they’d form a band. They never became very famous, but they played songs they’d written themselves at assemblies in school and sometimes in the local mall on special occasions. Kurara’s band had five people in it: a pair of sisters, Yukiko and Akira, who played the drums and the bass respectively, a keyboardist named Honoka, and a guitarist named Tayo, along with Kurara, who also played the guitar and sang. In the seventh grade, Kurara finally bought a real electric guitar with the money she’d saved up, and it quickly became her most prized possession.
In middle school, the five girls also entered their school’s band/strings programs. Akira and Honoka chose to play the violin, Kurara chose the viola, Tayo decided to play the trumpet, and Yukiko managed to secure the position of drummer in her group.
It probably would have been painfully obvious that Kurara was a Canetis if 90% of the songs the Strings program played hadn’t been happy Irish folk songs. Kurara, Akira and Honoka took to their instruments easily, although Kurara ended up being the only person that displayed Canetis tendencies. Occasionally, someone fainted, got sick or randomly stopped playing, and once, while Kurara was practicing alone in her classroom, a pair of students who were supposed to enter the room to get some papers instantly changed postures, walked straight past the classroom door and into a wall because Kurara was thinking about how she ‘hoped people would just ignore the music coming from the classroom‘ at the time.
Nobody suspected Kurara, but people figured there was probably a developing Canetis in one of the music programs. Honoka was mostly suspected because she tended to get lost in her instrument, so to speak. Honoka and Akira, in a strange twist of fate, were later found to have developed powers sourced from heat and ice, respectively. This greatly confused the both of them, as the source of their powers were very much the opposite of their personalities, as well as their roles in most of the themed shows the band had performed in.
Honoka had been a snow spirit, and with her calm and elegant demeanor, why she’d developed the ability to release fireworks from her fingertips in sufficiently warm circumstances bewildered her. And conversely, with Akira’s fiery personality and her role as a phoenix, she was somewhat disappointed by her ability. Honoka would’ve preferred healing powers, and what could Akira even do in temperatures below freezing?
In the eighth grade, right after Christmas, Tayo became the victim of a very serious car crash. Tayo’s arm was crushed and had to be amputated, and she also suffered some additional injuries that meant she had to stay in the hospital for a long time. The band dissolved after that, as everyone agreed that they couldn’t continue without Tayo.
Throughout the rest of eighth grade, the rest of the band visited Tayo in the hospital often. They played their instruments for her, they wrote songs, and they discussed their lives and the days when they played together as a band.
In the summer between eighth and ninth grade, Kurara brought everyone to Tayo’s hospital room with the intention of playing her viola for them. She’d practiced the entirety of Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D Minor, and she was so comfortable with the song that the thought of playing anything else for them was preposterous to her. Tayo took out her phone and placed it on her bedside table, intending to record the performance.
Kurara was initially nervous, and from Introitus-Requiem to Confutatis, the audience of four weren’t affected very much by the Canetis magic, aside from the music having an effect on their imaginations, causing them to visualise sprawling Gothic churches and hooded figures performing sinister rituals. But Kurara regained her confidence by Lacrimosa, her favourite piece in Requiem Mass, and the former band was taken over by Kurara’s spell.
The phone continued recording as Tayo, Yukiko, Akira and Honoka changed their demeanors in unison- they all stared at Kurara reverently, their eyes wide open and exuding a bright golden light. They murmured unintelligibly as Kurara played, occasionally letting out a “praise the Venom Queen” or a “She who has conquered Her suffering”.
Concentrating on her song, Kurara got through Lacrimosa and halfway through Domine Jesu Criste before she noticed what was happening. She abruptly stopped playing, startled and confused, and the spell was broken. None of the audience remembered what had happened after Kurara had started playing Lacrimosa, praising her obliviously on her skill and passion in the earlier songs. Kurara had to quickly explain that she was two songs past what they remembered and what she’d seen for them to pick up on her confusion. They remembered Tayo’s phone was still recording, and ran over to watch what had happened.
In watching the recording, the five of them were taken aback to see the glowing eyes and unsettling demeanor they’d developed, along with the creepy whispering. They sat there in silence for a bit, before concluding that Kurara was a Canetis. Kurara was flustered and sad that she probably wouldn’t be able to finish her show, but her friends insisted that they could record the rest of it and watch it afterwards.
So Kurara started again from Domine Jesu Criste and finished the little concert, although her audience of four was brainwashed and creepily murmuring in the background. After the concert, the five exchanged hugs and parted ways, as it was late into the night at this point. Kurara took a train from the hospital, and while on the train, she called her parents and tearfully explained that she’d just cast a spell with her music.
Within the week, Kurara had enrolled in the School of Music. She was nervous about starting to attend two years late, but her initial panic about her brainwashing powers had worn off and she was actually! Really! Excited! About! It! Kurara stocked up on spare guitar strings and picks, batteries and cheap throwaway headphones. She decided she’d bring all the sheet music she’d collected through her years in the band and the strings program, as well as the practice pieces for the guitar she used to train with when she was young. She started packing early, and almost overpacked with all the stuff she brought. She brought her guitar, of course- and her viola, but also a lot of random things and decorations she couldn’t live without.
And off she went. To the totally-not-super-dangerous Island of Nix to attend the School of Music.
Other- I am a Canetis. Praise the Venom Queen. Praise Her who has conquered Her suffering.
Also, fun fact: I googled “cool guitars” or something like that, and came across one that was just clear acrylic with no lights or opaque pickguard. I added the LEDS and pickguard in the description of Kurara’s guitar to make it seem even cooler, but I googled its description and found one exactly like I visualized it.
